Virtual and Augmented Reality workshops for spring 2019

Virtual and Augmented Reality workshops

The NC State University Libraries offers a variety of Virtual and Augmented Reality workshops for students, all of which require no prior experience. Participants will learn about VR/AR illustration and programming, as well as 3D scanning. VR/AR workshops this semester include “Introduction to Virtual Reality Illustration,” “Basics of Virtual Reality for Science Educators,” and more. And basic VR Orientation sessions give you access to the VR Studio at D. H. Hill.

VR/AR workshops for the spring 2019 semester are:

Introduction to Virtual Reality Illustration
Friday, Feb. 8, 12:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m.
Friday, Mar. 1, 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
Friday, Apr. 5, 12:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m.
Virtual Reality Studio (D. H. Hill)
Harness the power of virtual reality and 3-dimensional, volumetric illustration in this brief introductory workshop. With 100% of our time spent hands-on with VR equipment and illustrating in virtual environments, we’ll produce multiple original VR sketches using Tilt Brush and other VR illustration suites and even have the opportunity to post our work online. Come learn a new tool set and spend a relaxing hour-and-a-half expressing yourself in VR.

Introduction to webVR with A-Frame
Friday, Feb. 15, 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.
Friday, Mar. 8, 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Friday, Apr. 19, 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m.
3D Scanning Studio (D. H. Hill)
In just one hour, we’ll teach you the basics of A-Frame, a leading open-source tool for creating Virtual Reality experiences that launch from your web browser. This new style of website, or webVR, is a leading way to distribute VR content and participate in the grassroots webVR community. Even if you’ve never written a line of code, come learn how to manifest your ideas in VR! If possible, please come prepared with a laptop computer and register for a Github account before arriving for the workshop.

Virtual Reality Studio Orientation
Mondays 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
Tuesdays 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
Virtual Reality Studio (D. H. Hill)
This orientation is required to access the D. H. Hill Jr. Virtual Reality (VR) Studio. It will provide a general introduction to virtual reality history, technology, use, making, and safety considerations. At the end of the orientation, attendees may sign a waiver allowing them to use the VR Studio during open hours
